The first part of this rolling and scenic route is on the Ave of The Giants among the redwoods of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It’s incredibly scenic and somewhat remote. Note, that this is not a particularly easy day. While the route may be only 55 miles, you do complete about 3500 feet in climbing (the mapmyride estimate on the map view is a bit off as it calculates the topography, not the location of the road). The climbs in many areas are in the 6% range, with some approaching 8% for short distances (such as the climb near Redway at mile 21). It is important to note that while the grades may approach 8%, it will only be that for short distances (e.g. a quarter mile), as this is a major truck route and grades do need to be moderate. As the profile shows there are two segments of concern, miles 21-30 and miles 40-55. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery.
Start anywhere in Weott. It's not a large town.
